Pokemon Stellar Crown’s 5 most valuable cards on release day

Pokemon Trading Card Game’s latest set, Scarlet & Violet—Stellar Crown, officially released Friday. Now, the chase is officially on for a handful of top cards.

Stellar Crown introduces Stellar Tera Pokémon ex to the Pokémon TCG. Each Stellar Tera Pokémon ex has a special stellar attack with names inspired by various gemstones, which cost three different types of energy to use. In addition, the expansion features unique illustrations highlighting the crystalline qualities of the Stellar Tera Pokémon ex.

Of course, the most expensive cards in a set often have more to do with popularity, appearance and rarity than playability.

According to TCGplayer’s Price Guide, here are the Top 5 chases on Stellar Crown release day — plus another card on the list you won’t want to overlook.

1. Terapagos ex – 170/142 ($131)

It’s no surprise here to see this Special Illustration Rare card topping the list. This Terapagos is visually brilliant and reflects all the set is about, showing off multi-colored gemstones. It will be worth monitoring whether $131 is an early peak or just the beginning of something big.

2. Lacey – 172/142 ($75)

Another Special Illustration Rare, this one depicts the Fairy-type trainer from the Scarlet & Violet games. It’s commonplace to see the female trainer card near the top of price lists, with this Lacey following on the heels of Carmine from Twilight Masquerade.

3. Hydrapple ex – 167/142 ($55)

It’s tough to know if these “syrpents” will stick in a set that includes such vibrant illustrations. However, its status as a Special Illustration Rare has Hydrapple high on the release day charts.

4. Galvantula ex – 168/142 ($47)

Who knew spiders were so popular? Galvantula, which evolves from Joltik, dates back to the Black and White era. In addition to some flashy colors, the card could prove playable given the damage it can deal to an opponent’s ex or V Pokemon.

5. Squirtle – 148/142 ($42)

This one may have upward mobility. Squirtle helps complete an Illustration Rare line that started with Charmander’s release as a promo card in the Obsidian Flames elite trainer box. Consider too that this Squirtle’s Pokemon 151 counterpart goes for $31, and it hardly gets top billing in that set.

9?! Bulbasaur- 143/142 ($30)

Bulbasaur’s Pidgey-fied art is poised to climb the ranks. As with Squirtle, it completes the art trio dating back to the prior Charmander release. That Charmander card — due in part to the hype of being joined now by Bulbasaur and Squirtle — is only a $6 card raw but trades at an impressive $135 in a PSA 10, according to PriceCharting.com.
