Is now the time to buy Pokemon Twilight Masquerade’s Greninja?

The Pokemon Scarlet & Violet era’s prized frog is taking a dip.

Secret Illustration Rare Greninja from Twilight Masquerade hit a TCGplayer peak market value of $301.61 just more than a month ago. Since then, it receded to as low as $274.44 on September 10.

The price cut has been gradual, with Greninja firmly cemented as Twilight Masquerade’s top chase. But will the trend continue, or should collectors pounce now?

Before making that call, consider a pullback in price has coincided with a relative lack of demand.

Greninjas flew out of TCGplayer’s marketplace following Twilight Masquerade’s May 24 release,  pushing it to $200 in June and $250 in July before that August peak. But as the chart started trending downward, so too did purchases.

Whereas 40-50 Greninjas were selling per week in July, there wasn’t a 7-day period in August in which the card hit 30 transactions. Greninja isn’t getting bought back up — a sign we potentially haven’t seen it hit the bottom of this dip.

And the last month’s dip…

Of course, Greninja’s marketplace doesn’t unfold in a vacuum. Twilight Masquerade is nearly four months old and still readily available. More collectors continue to pull it from packs, diluting supply, and Pokemon has rolled out two new sets since its release.

Stellar Crown launched Friday. Likely due to that, only three Greninjas sold last week through TCGplayer. The card remains plenty colorful, but it’s no longer the Pokemon Trading Card Game’s shiniest new object.

Greninja is still solidly Scarlet & Violet’s most valuable raw card. In a sign of its strength, all PSA 10 sales via eBay have remained above $500 throughout September.

Time will tell whether its popularity ascends to the likes of Sword and Shield staples such as Umbreon, Giratina and Gengar. Or this month’s dip could signal a move the other way.
