Pikachu with Grey Felt hat promo card drops under $100; will it rally?

Pokemon card collectors who passed on the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat Promo craze could consider now the time to finally pick up a copy.

Released almost a year ago on September 28, 2023, Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat headlined the Pokemon x Van Gogh collaboration celebrating the Van Gogh Museum’s 50th anniversary.

Customers received a copy of Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat either as part of their visit to the museum in Amsterdam or with a purchase on the Pokemon Center website. The promos were offered in limited supplies — enough so that they made some international news following a frenzied scene to claim cards at the Van Gogh Museum’s opening.

It’s fair to say the calamity calmed down. TCGplayer now lists Pikachu with Grey Felt hat at a $95 market value, well off the all-time high of $172 it reached in late October of 2023.

The current rate is one to consider, especially if this Pikachu follows normal trneds. Cards tend to spike at release when the FOMO factor peaks. As supply floods the market and satisfies demand, values drop until cards are out of print. Then prices begin their climb back.

Of course, Pikachu with Grey Felt is not a normal Pokemon card. As a limited-release promo, it never fully satisfied demand on the heels of wide promotion, with press clippings that include CNN. This is also a timeless card pairing one of Pokemon’s most popular characters and one of the most influential artists of all time.

In 2018, Pokemon similarly paid homage to Edvard Munch’s famous painting “The Scream” with a Pikachu promo handed out to attendees of the Tokyo Art Museum. Recent raw/ungraded sales of that card appear on eBay in the $500-$600 range. In a PSA 10, it fetches $2,000-$3,000.

There are other examples of Pokemon collaborating with artists or their estates. These cards tend to mature over time. If that’s the case again, Pikachu with Grey Felt looks like a steal sitting under $100.
